"You are standing up for the better humanity of us all by standing against the inhumanity of these camps, and against the fear and hatred peddled by our government... Tonight the razor wire is falling... at Woomera, and in our hearts and minds!!"
The Australian governement has exploited the plight of these refugees to manipulate the lowest impulses of our humanity for political gain, to spread fear, hatred and distrust amongst Australians, and to stand in the way of understanding and compassion. Those who now stand at the gates of Woomera, putting your bodies on the line to demand a just and humane response to the suffering of the detainees, and an end to the barbarous incarceration of asylum seekers, are also making a stand for the better humanity of all of us. I can't be in Woomera tonight but my spirit is raised by those who are there - by the protestors, for stepping into the void left by the graceless depravity of our poiticians; and by the refugees for their continued fight to assert their humanity in the face of all that is worst in some of their fellow humans.
