this page documents incidents where immigrants have died while trying to enter Europe. the list is by no means complete as it only contains incidents that have been reported in the media. most of the deaths at the border never make it into the papers. also it only counts confirmed deaths while in incidents at sea (which make up the majority of the cases) there are often substantial amounts of people who are missing or unaccounted for. it is safe to assume that most of them have also died.

Since we started collecting such incidents here in december 2002 the number of victims has risen to 3899. Of these, 588 persons died in 2003, 296 in 2004, 343 in 2005, 653 in 2006, 732 in 2007, 682 in 2008 and 431 in 2009].

14.Apr.10: 1 person drowned and 3 have been rescued by a merachnt vessel after a boat carrying Algerian migrants to Spain sank about 30 kilometres from the Spanish city of Almeria. 11 of the 14 people that were on the boat, which left the Algerian town of Oran for the trip across the Mediterranean Sea are still missing and are believed to have drowned. 14.Jan.10: the Greek Coast Guard recovered corpse of a drowned migrant off the coast of Alexandroupoli. It is believed that he drowned when boat ran aground at the end of December bringing the total loss of life from that shipwrek to 22. (source:

04.Jan.10: Greek fisherman and Greek rescuers have recovered the bodies of 21 migrants in the delta of the Maritsa/Evros river that forms the border between Greece and Turkey. 12.Dec.09: a boat carrying 27 migrants sank in bad weather off the coast of the Greek island of Leros. Local fishermmen managed to rescue 25 passengers from a rocky islet and recovered the bodies of two others, who appear to have drowned. (source: todays zaman)

29.Oct.09: the Spanish coast guard has rescued two migrants from a small boat off the south eastern coast of Cartagena. The bodies of two other migrants were retrieved from the boat as well. 26.Oct.09: after 5 days adrift in the stormy sea between Libya and Sicily 298 migrants from Somalia and Eritrea have been transferred from the boat carrying them to the port of Pozzallo on south coast of Sicily. 19.Sep.09: At least eight migrants have drowned after a small boat carrying about 40 people sank close to Perejil Island off the Moroccan coast in the straight of Gibraltar. It is belived that he died aboard a boat carrying up to 80 eritrean migrants attempting to reach Italy and was thrown into the sea by his fellow passengers a few days earlier. 20.Aug.09: a patrol boat of the Guardia di Finanza has rescued 5 Eritrean migrants from a rubber dinghy that was floating 12 miles of off the coast of Lampedusa. All of them are in poor medical condition from starvation and dehydration. According to the survivors the boat carrying 78 passengers had left the Libyan coast 3 weeks earlier and had run out of food water and gasoline about a week later. during the 3 week odyssey in the straight of gibraltar 73 other passengers died from starvation and where thrown overboard. 22.Apr.09: A turkish cargo ship rescued 140 migrants from two boats that had trouble at sea between Malta and Lampedusa. The crew of the Pinar also recovered the body of a woman, who appeared to be about 20 years old, in one of the boats. 16.Mar.09: the bodies of 11 migrants have been found in the desert between Al Gatrun, the last Libyan oasis and Fort Madame in Niger. It is believed that the dead are migrants who had tried to reach Italy but had been intercepted by the Libyan authorities who subsequently left them behind on the border between Niger and Libya, 80 kilometers from the next military base in Niger. 07.Mar.09: One migrant was deadly injured in an attempt to overcome the border fence separating the Spanish enclave Ceuta from Morocco. The 25 year old bled to death after he was stuck in the the barbed wire of the border fence. (source:

21.Feb.09: One african migrant died when a flimsy vessel carrying 35 migrants tried to land on the southern spainish coast near Montril. It is belived that they were migrants traveling in a small craft that sank during its voayage from Turkey to Greece. The first body was found by fishermen pulling in their nets, later five bodies were washed ashore between the Evros River delta and Alexandroupolis and a seventh was found by another fishing boat. 12.Sep.08: The italian coast guard intercepetd a boat with 59 migrants on board off Portopalo di Capo Passero on the southern tip of Sicily. 30.Aug.08: 14 migrants hailing from Skikda and Annaba provinces in eastern Algeria have drowned in the open sea between Algeria and Sardinia after the small boat carrying them was overthrown by strong waves. 29.Aug.08: Seventy african migrants from Eritrea, Ghana, Somalia and Sudan perished when their boat sank in the Mediterranean Sea off Malta. 8 survivors were plucked out of the water by a Maltese fishing vessel, the Madonna di Pompei, from a semi-submerged dinghy 70 kilometers off Malta.
